CAMRA at the King of the Belgians

Picture
The Campaign for Real Ale must be one of the most effective campaigning organizations in Britain.  It was formed in 1971 at which  time the large companies which controlled the industry saw the benefits to themselves of selling lager instead of Real Ale.  It was easier to dispense and had a longer shelf life.  There was a massive promotion of lager which meant sale of Real Ale was in serious decline.  CAMRA was formed as a reaction to this situation to promote the benefits of Real Ale.

CAMRA is an independent voluntary consumer organization with 60,000 members.  Membership is open to all individuals but not corporate entities such as breweries or pubs.  Its aims are to :-

  • Maintain consumer rights.
  • Promote quality choice and value for money.
  • Support the public house as a focus of community life.
  • Campaign for the appreciation of traditional beers, ciders and perries as part of national heritage and culture.
  • Seek improvements in all licensed premises and throughout the brewing industry.
As part of their activities CAMRA hold beer festivals which are a great way to learn about the huge variety of real ales available.

For more information on the current campaigns and how to join see the excellent CAMRA website at www.camra.org.uk
